The event was founded in 2010 by the Ven John Ashe (who was Archdeacon of Lynn and Warden of Readers) following a serious car accident in 2009 when his wife’s life was saved by the East Anglian Air Ambulance who airlifting her from the crash scene. Since its inception the event has raised over £123,000, half of which has been donated to the air ambulance and half to local churches, youth groups, schools and charities.
Following a review of the event and its costs – and given the number of participants and visitors has dropped year-on-year recently – it was felt that now is the time for the event to gracefully finish. Many churches run summer fates, fayres and community days and these have understandably been one of the reasons why a number of churches chose not to take part.
With thanks to generous hosts, the event has been held at some stunning venues: Barningham Hall, Sennowe Park, Sandringham Park, Raynham Hall, the Stody Estate, Houghton Hall, Wolterton Hall and Holkham Hall.
Speaking about the event, Richard Butler, Diocesan Secretary said:
“My thanks go to the Ven John Ashe, Alison Steward and Clive Wyle who dedicated much time and energy into making the day such a successful and worthwhile event. I also want to recognise the contributions and thank the East Anglian Air Ambulance, staff from the Diocesan team, and the many volunteers, exhibitors, stall holders and suppliers.”
