People gathered outside County Hall and almost 100 dignitaries were present as the announcement of a new Sovereign was made.
A youth wind band played as the platform party took their places, which included Lord Lieutenant Lady Dannatt MBE, High Sheriff David Hill and Bishop Graham, in his position as Bishop of Norwich.
Lady Dannatt MBE spoke of her personal honour and privilege to have served her late Majesty the Queen as Lord Lieutenant and says she will continue to serve King Charles III.
The High Sheriff then made the full proclamation, which included;
“Whereas it has pleased Almighty God to call to his mercy our late sovereign lady Queen Elizabeth II, of blessed and glorious memory, by whose decease the crown of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is solely and rightfully come to the prince Charles Philip Arthur George.”
We do now hereby, with one voice, publish and proclaim that the Prince Charles Philip Arthur George is now, by the death of our late sovereign of happy memory, become our only lawful and rightful liege lord, Charles III
God save the King.”
Bishop Graham then prayed for the new King;
“Guide him with your wisdom, and strengthen him with your power. Let justice, truth, holiness, peace and love and all the virtues that come from you, flourish in his reign. Grant that all he says and does may be to your glory and the welfare of his people.” (part of the full prayer)
And in memory of her late Majesty the Queen;
“As we remember the gift of her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, so we place her in your love and your care, and we give you thanks for Charles, your servant and our King. For his devotion to his family, nation and commonwealth, and to the earth, our fragile home.” (part of the full prayer)
At the end of the ceremony, the flag was lowered to half mast.
Further proclamations were then made across local councils and boroughs in Norfolk and the nation.
