Sea baptisms at Cromer

On a beautiful sunny Sunday in September, three people celebrated their call to faith and following Jesus by being baptised in the sea at Cromer.

Baptism marks the beginning of a journey with God which continues for the rest of our lives, the first step in response to God’s love. For all involved, particularly the candidates but also parents and godparents, it is a joyful moment when we rejoice in what God has done for us in Christ, making promises and declaring the faith.

Water is a universal symbol of purity and cleansing. In baptism, it symbolises purification, rebirth, and spiritual cleansing. It signifies the washing away of sins and initiation into the Christian faith. Through water, individuals are united with Christ’s death and resurrection, embracing a new life as they enter the Christian community.

Revd Will Warren is the vicar of Cromer Church. Revd Will said:

It was a joy and a privilege to celebrate with our candidates as they publicly professed their faith in Christ and their desire to submit to him as Lord and Saviour. It was made even better by glorious sunshine, a calm sea and a crowded beach!

Following the sea baptisms, the Bishop of Lynn, the Rt Revd Dr Jane Steen, then presided at a service in the church, confirming other candidates during the service. Bishop Jane said:

Cromer Parish Church sea baptisms are wonderful.  Jesus spent many hours by the Sea of Galilee, teaching and preaching.  Baptism at sea reminds us of the life and love of the Lord whom we serve.

Cromer Church is an Anglican church on the North Norfolk coast. There are two church buildings, the Parish Church in the town centre and St Martin’s in Mill Road.
