“The choking of our river courses with sewage, and swimmers and surfers dodging ‘floaters’, needs not only our lament, but a culture change in the industry to give the highest protection to the intrinsic value of our nation’s seas and lakes and lochs, streams and rivers – those liquid threads of the water of life that wind their way through our landscapes and memories.”

The Bishop of Norwich spoke in a House of Lords of debate on Thursday 6 February 2025, asking how the Government will ensure fines paid by water companies are used to repair the damage done by sewage pollution.

The Rt Revd Graham Usher, also spoke in another debate on the same day, about the importance of faith communities on the social, economic and personal value of life long learning.

Bishop Graham joined the House of Lords on Thursday 26 October 2023. At the time, Bishop Graham said:

“It is an immense privilege to have the opportunity to serve in the House of Lords. My desire is to always be mindful of the wellbeing of others, fostering stronger and flourishing communities here and abroad, whilst living more sustainably on our single-island planet home. At a time of many threats, including war, terrorism, disease, inequality, climate change and biodiversity loss, we need to foster a common purpose as we seek to mend the world. My Christian faith inspires me in that quest, creating space to listen to the voices of those from other faith communities, in our shared calling for a more peaceable and equitable future. I am continually inspired by the richness of life across Norfolk and Waveney, and I will seek every opportunity to champion those who live and work within the area covered by the Diocese of Norwich.”
