The Bishop of Norwich and the Catholic Bishop of Salford are urging the UK Government to ensure large polluters contribute more towards climate finance – as world leaders negotiate finance targets at the COP29 summit in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The Bishop of Norwich, the Rt Revd Graham Usher is the Church of England’s lead bishop for the environment. The Bishop of Salford, the Rt Revd John Arnold, is the lead bishop for environmental issues in the Catholic Church of England and Wales.

The two bishops wrote to the Prime Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero and Minister for Climate.

Their joint letter argues that the costs of of the climate crisis should not fall on those countries which have contributed least to climate change but are bearing its most devastating impacts.

They call on ministers to seek funding from wealthy fossil fuel companies to help support countries most affected by the climate crisis, rather than redirecting existing aid budgets.
