Grants and funding for clergy

Grants in support of training; sabbaticals; to help retired clergy or widowed spouses; and more.

CMD Training Allowance

  • The Diocese gives licensed clergy and licensed lay workers an allowance of £450 over 3 years, which is held in the CMD budget.  This can be used for retreats or other areas of professional development.  At conferences where CMD 4+ has been billed directly e.g. Praxis, the cost of those participating will be deducted from their annual allowance.

Ministry Bursary Awards from Ecclesiastical

  • Clergy can apply for a grant in support of a specific sabbatical related activity (not a church related project). A letter of support is needed from the Bishop.

The Mrs R J Colman Trust

  • Offers grants or interest-free grants typically ranging from £100 to £12,250 to help retired clergy who have served in the Diocese of Norwich or have had Permission to Officiate, the widowed spouses or surviving civil partners of the above retired clergy, divorced or legally separated spouses or dissolved or legally separated civil partners of Norwich diocesan clergy.

The grants can be given towards repairs to property, replacement of domestic appliances, respite breaks, hospital visiting, mobility or disability assistance. Grants are available for Retreat fees (up to 50%) but excluding travel costs. The trust helps those “in conditions of need, hardship or distress”. This trust was formed some years ago following a bequest and with the object of assisting retired clergy who had at some time served in the Diocese or who have had permission to officiate here and who might require some financial assistance.

Subsequently the rules were extended and more recently civil partners have been added. We welcome applications from those who are eligible in respect of a grant or an interest free loan. All applications are considered in confidence and we endeavour to help wherever we can. The trustees usually meet four times a year in January, April, July and October but we can always deal with urgent applications.

If you wish to apply or discuss any matter in the first instance please contact our secretary, Helen Grogutt.

American Memorial Chapel Travel Grant

  • This grant scheme gives a member of the clergy, from any denomination, the exciting opportunity to undertake a tour of the USA for approximately four weeks with the aim of fostering understanding and the exchange of ideas. The panel is particularly looking for proposals that will have an impact for those involved and their communities and that will forge on-going and productive relationships between both individuals and organisations. Bishop of Norwich: Financial assistance for clergy

  • Bishop Graham is conscious that at times clergy colleagues face specific financial or other difficulties, and he has some limited funds that he can use at his discretion to support clergy at these times. These funds are made available thanks to the generosity of the Henry Smith Charity, the Church of England Clergy Stipends Trust and the Queen Victoria Clergy Fund, among others.

Clergy who find themselves in need of assistance should speak with their Archdeacon in the first instance. (Please note that these funds are limited and have award criteria so may not be available in all situations, and as with all grants you will need to make your tax adviser aware of any awards made when you complete your tax return.)
